Composition Design:

Figure, Environment, and Still-Life composition within the Classical and Imaginative Realism traditions.

Mar 28-31, Tue-Fri, 9:30-4:30

$725/student

(lunch provided)

Recommended painting or drawing experience level: Medium to advanced

Free to the public - Talks and show of small works Mon Mar 27, 5-7pm

A successful composition design will grab a viewer’s attention from across the room. It’s the ‘lighthouse’ that invites them in to take a closer look at your drawing or painting. Without a strong design, your artwork will most likely get passed by, and viewers won’t see all the subtle details you’ve invested into it.

In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of how to create dynamic and balanced compositions in your figurative, environment, and still-life paintings. We’ll use the techniques of ‘thumbnailing’ and ‘value studies’ to experiment with our compositions within these subjects. We’ll work from the live figure, master copy, still-life, and environment reference, and then learn how to combine source material in order to create imaginative artwork.

Tenaya Sims is the founder and lead instructor of Georgetown Atelier in Seattle, WA. Currently in its 15th year of operation, Georgetown Atelier merged with Gage Academy of Art in 2016.
